Norwood Fair

Xtreme Truckz sent our guy to check out the Norwood Fair Truck and Car Show on Thanksgiving weekend.  It has one of the best car and truck shows in Ontario with hundreds of top quality cars and trucks on display. Any make or model can enter as long as it is older than 1985.  There were 4x4s, classics, rat rods, you name it, it was there. We got a few pictures to highlight what was there.  There were also some local dealerships there with displays showcasing newer trucks and muscle cars like the new Chargers, Challengers and Rams.  Definately a cheap day for under $10 and you get to see a wide variety of cars and trucks.  There were also a huge display of antique tractors, livestock and horse demos.  The midway and animals are sure to entertain the kids and who doesn't like deep fried Mars bars?

Autofest 2009

It is almost Fall and that means that Autofest is just around the corner.  Autofest is one of the biggest car and truck shows in Ontario and is held on August 28, 29 and 30. It is held at Lakeview Park which is at the very south end of Bloor St in Oshawa.  Autofest is open to all makes from 1976 and older.  This show has something for everyone.  There is hot rods, rat rods, muscle cars, classic trucks, lowriders and some 4x4s.  There is lots to see and do, lots of food and a ton of people to talk to.  This is a great way to get out and show off your ride or get ideas and inspiration or get info on cruise nights in your area or clubs.  They are also giving away prizes like a Chevy crate motor, tires, tool boxes, a car and more. Xtreme Truckz.com went last year to check it out and were not dissapointed.  We are looking forward to this year's show.  Check out www.autofestoshawa.com for more details.

Post Event Wrap Up

This year's Autofest was the best so far!!  There were over 1400 vehicles on display.  You had everything from rat rods, muscle cars, resto mods, classic trucks, a fire truck, even Volkswagen buses.  You had every make and model imaginable. They were handing out all kinds of prizes all day long including a 50/50 draw that was approaching $5000 when we left and they were also giving away tires and a GM crate engine.  It cost $10 to get in and it was a bargain.  Vehicles were coming in all day so you had to keep checking them out to make sure you saw all the cars.  Even the spectator parking lot had a collection of cool rides.  There were a lot of car and truck clubs to talk to as well as specialty shops like Bill's Truck Shop of Courtice who specializes in just GM/Chevy trucks. If you need a hard to find part for a 55 Chevy, Bill can get it for you or a southern rust free hood for your 72, he's your man.  He rides in style to with a convertible late 60s Chevy Blazer.

Campbellford 4x4 Challenge

The 155th annual Campbellford Fair is August 7-9 in Campbellford, Ontario.  Campbellford is a cool little town right on the Trent Waterway, southeast of Peterborough.  XtremeTruckz.com will be there on August 8 to check out the 4x4 Challenge.  There will also be a show and shine before the event starts. The 4x4 Challenge is to start at about noon.  It costs $7 for adults, 7-12 yrs is $1 and under 6 is free.  A 3 day pass is $18.  In addition to the 4x4 stuff, there will be live entertainment, a midway, beer tent, arts and crafts, demo derby and livestock demos and tractor pulls. You can get more info at www.campbellfordfair.ca.

Post Event Wrap Up

The Campbellford Fair 4x4 Challenge was a little disapointing. There were a good number of rigs there. There was also a good variety of vehicles. There were Jeeps, Cherokees, Suzuki, trucks, diesels, beaters and show trucks.  The disapointing part was that the organizers went overkill on the mud pits and rock crawl. Obviously their intention was to put on the best show possible but only 2 rigs made it through the rock crawl and only 2 rigs made it through the mud pit.  The pit meant for 35" tires and smaller was swallowing 44" tires.  Only 2 people tried the 35" tires and up pit to get stuck.  We spent most of the day watching the dozer pull people out.  They also had the teeter totter to test driver's skill at balancing and the RTI ramp to measure axel articulation.

Again the rigs that showed up were pretty cool.  It is real interesting to see the different rides and engineering that goes into them.  Some may look like a total beater but will really surprise you with it's trail capabilities.  Some trucks with 44s had almost zero axel articulation but a smaller trail rig with 33s had amazing scores on the articulation ramp.  Then you had the oposite with some trucks with 44s getting really great scores. It just goes to prove that rigs are purpose built for the individual's taste and purpose.  A rock crawler may not look pretty but will excell on the rocks and more technical tests like the RTI ramp, but a big motor, big tire mud bogger will blow them away in the pits.  And then some do well in both.  It was really nice to see all kinds of vehicles show up and see how they are different and see the surprises that some held.  They all had one thing in common though, they love to wrench on their rides and love running them in their elements.  Post Event Wrap Up

Where to start? It rained off and on from Thursday through till Sunday.  Oddly it didn't cause a huge problem for most of the events. The truck show portion was on display all weekend and you were able to walk arouind and look inside the big rigs and pick ups.  It is amazing to see all the inovations and details these guys were coming up with.  You had big rigs with hardwood and marble flooring, to hardwood grills, 5 foot stick shifters, custom fabricated grills and details, chopped roofs, extended hoods etc.  The rain just made more work for these guys as they were polishing all weekend.  Aparently, they lost about 80 acres of display area so there were notr as many trucks this year. The trucks that were there, were amazing though.  You had everything from antiques to brand new 2010 models.

The pick up truck show was a huge let down. They were spread out into 2 areas at opposite ends of the grounds.  They let people show off there newer stock trucks which we thought was stupid.  Why pay to see stock trucks when you can see them at the mall for free?  There were some very nice custom trucks there too. Dave Briard of Gasp Air Brushing, who is also a member of this site was there with his tricked out Dodge Ram 2wd showcasing some of his talented airbrushing. There were also some real nice 4x4s that we hope to feature in the coming months.  The funny thing was that we walked through the camping area and were able to find some real nice trucks that should have been in the pick up show.  There was definately some nice rides there but they need to work on doing a better job of getting some real nice trucks in there.

Back to the rain.  By Thursday night they were actualy dragging RVs into there sites because it was so muddy.  People were mudbogging in the camping area until the cops came in and started dishing out fines and charges.  By Sunday, they had to get bigger tractors in to haul everyone out. It was quite a sight. I had never seen anything like it before. It was almost like seeing the aftermath of a tornado on Sunday morning.

The concerts were great. Terrie Clark and Doc Walker ruled the weekend. It was pouring Sunday so we didn't stick around for George Canyon. Tara Oram was also really good.

The pulls were awesome. I have never been anywhere where they pull all day for 4 days with different stuff.  There were two different pulling organizations in, one from Canada and one from New York.  We were treated to some new rigs that we have never seen before.  These guys and girls definately know their stuff.

All in all, we had a good weekend. You can't do much about the weather. Like I said before, for the most part, the weather didn't effect the events too much. People were able to enjoy almost everything untill Sunday. Thats when it rained a little too hard for people to be out enjoying themselves.  People were definately pissed off with the rowdies trying to mud bog in the camping area but the cops fixed that. Good music, good rigs, good pulls, good time. XT

This years Powerwheels Offroad Challenge was a huge success. There were over 1000 people through the gates all weekend.  There were a ton of people who chose to camp out all weekend in trailers and tents and they got a great family weekend.

There was a great showing of mud trucks and offroad racing trucks.  We were surprised by the number of locals who built there own rigs just for this event.

A big thanks to Blake Construction for reworking the track and pit. Way bigger and better than last year. Jim Leonard and his volunteers put in countless hours reworking the site to make it better for the competitors and fans. It was definately worth the effort.

An absolutely awesome family sporting event.  A big thanks to Jim Leonard for putting it on and we are looking forward to many more. There is talk of a second event in September. Stay tuned for details. We have posted pics in the Galleries and video clips in Video section.

Golden Beach Resort Car & Truck Show

This Sunday June 21, Xtreme Truckz.com will be attending the annual Golden Beach Resort Car & Truck Show.  It will be the 17th year that the show has been put on and there is always a good turn out with lots of vehicles and vendors. What makes this a great event is that they don't discriminate. The vehicles consist of antiques, muscle cars, trucks, 4x4s, imports and new vehicles. The show starts at 9 and runs untill 3.  The resort also has a pool, beach, fishing, boating etc. to keep you busy all day.  Golden Beach is located on the south shore of Rice Lake just west of Roseneath. 7100 County Road 18, Roseneath, Ontario.

Post Event Wrap Up

The Golden Beach Truck & Car Show was a great event. There were all kinds of cars and trucks on display from antiques, classics, hot rods, muscle cars, imports all the way to brand new. Lots for everyone to look at for inspiration for their next project or just to admire.  You can tell alot of time and money goes into these restorations anf builds.  Proceeds from the show went to support the local fire department which was a great cause.  Its always cool to see sweet rides and help out a worthy cause at the same time.  I was surprised to see how far some people were coming to show their car. Some people drove 3 hours to get there.  They weren't dissapointed. When you were done looking at the cars and trucks, you could go to the beer tent or you could go fishing or swimming. XT

Post Event Wrap Up

The Millbrook Fair was a great event again this year. You had truck and tractor pulls Thursday through Saturday.  They had everything pulling from vintage tractors, dump trucks, highway tractors, local 4x4s, diesels, pro stock tractors, modifieds. You name it, they had it and they put on a great show.

Sunday, they initiated a new event. The mud bog, rock crawl and off road demonstrations.  I'm not sure if future versions will be competition based or demonstration but this year's demo was great.  You had the RTI ramps that measure axel articulation and the teeter totter which showcases the driver's control to centre his rig.  You also had the rock crawl which was a course lined with boulders that combined the articulation and driver control with the set up of the rig.  And then of course you had the mud bogs. They had 2 pits set up. One for 39" tires and smaller and one for 40" tires and bigger.  They had over 30 trucks entered in the demonstrations with a few different offroad clubs in attendence. They actualy had to turn people away.

What we found somewhat surprising was that some of the mud bog trucks had better articulation than some crawlers. Some of the mud trucks also did the rock crawl with no problem and some of the crawlers excelled in their domain but were not quite as good in the mud.  A lot of people dislike big monster trucks as they say that they are "Big Gay Trucks" and aren't good for much.  This event proved what we knew all along.  Some, not all, big monster trucks can do the articulation and rocks just as well as the purpose built crawlers.  And of course some crawlers can do the mud just as well as the mud trucks. Bottomline, you can build your truck to do what ever you want it to and some will surprise you so keep an open mind.  Some people like just rocks and trails and others like mud and some are just pavement pounders. To each their own. Can't wait till next year.XT

Roseneath Mud Bog

The annual Roseneath Mud Bog is happening on May 23. It is on a farm just outside of Roseneath, Ontario on County Road 24 just before Foreman 4x4's shop. The farm is on the north side of the road.  A lot of people head out to this annual event and you get to see all types of trucks and SUVs playin in the mud.  It is a non sanctioned event and it's just people having fun. There are few rules other than have fun and keep everyone's safety in mind. THis event is absolutely FREE but they do ask for donations to help maintain the facility. Xtreme Truckz will be out there taking some pictures and video for the site.

Post Event Wrap Up

It was our first chance to get out to the Roseneath Mud Bog. I have to say we were a little dissapointed. There was definately some cool stuff but the place has potential for so much more. Xtreme Truckz.com would give it a 6/10.  As I said, there was some cool stuff like Mr. Grand Am driving around a red Pontiac Grand Am trying to kill it. When we got there, we saw him doing donuts in it with thick smoke streaming out so thick you couldn't see. He then took it muddin and of course got it burried. It got funny when an ATV drove up onto the roof while the guy and his passengers were still in it.  Then a guy drove his Jeep up onto the hood.  As I said, it was funny.

There were a lot of junkers there just for fun and there were quite a few nice 4x4s from some very nice daily drivers to big money monster trucks like Aaron Foreman's red Chev on 44s with a 496 stroker motor and Steve Dobb's mud drag truck to a tricked out custom built buggy on 44s and v8. Like I said, some very cool rides.

The pit was where this bog let people down a bit.  The pit is basically a square track with a small wooded area in the middle making it impossible to see all the action. The viewing area was a field that allowed you to only see the front stretch and a bit of the side pit.  It was too dangerous to venture down the sides to see the rest of the action. There was also bush on each of the far sides so you couldn't choose a stretch you wanted to watch and sit there. You could only view it from the one area overlooking the front stretch.  With a chainsaw and a bit of work to open it up a bit would certainly help.  There was lots of room to view the parked rigs and camping areas. There was also a refreshment tent set up to kepp people fed.

The other thing that had us scratching our heads was that there were absolutely no signs up to direct you to the event. There were a few once you got on the property but none along the road, making it extremely difficult for first timers. I'm sure a few came out looking for it and bailed on the event when they couldn't find it.

All in all not a bad event to attend but it definately needs work to contend with the other truck events that it competes with to get attention and people trhough the gates.  Now these guys don't do it to get rich, they just like to have fun but it has so much more potential.XT

Post Event Wrap Up

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make this event as I had a scheduling conflict but I was able to show up to take some pictures and checkout some of Durham 4x4 Club's rigs.

I was impressed with what I saw. I am not a member of the club and have never been to their show and shine before.  I have seen their website and have been on their forums but this was my first chance to see the club and their rides.

I counted about 21 rigs when I was there. You had daily drivers with mild mods to fully tricked out and custom built trail rigs and everything in between.  Sometimes trail rigs are just beat up junk with dents and scratches all over them.  This isn't the case here, granted, some have a few war wounds but for the most part, you could take these rigs out to cruise nights or local shows and fit right in.

Most rigs were Jeeps, with a few Toyotas, Fords and Chevys mixed in. It looked like the average tire size was 35 inches with some as big as 37 inches.  Most had about 4 to 5 inches of lift.  These mods make it an affordable hobby if you already have a rig. These are not built for show so all you really need is a lift, tires and maybe a winch to get started.   Even if you don't have a rig , there are some entry level rides that you can get that are well suited for trails.  Vehicles like Suzuki Samarias and Chevy Trackers are cheap entries into the sport costing less than $3,000.00.  You could even find some cheap Jeeps or if you are real handy you could buy a beat up truck and cut it and shorten it down and end up with a very capable rig. Even used tires are not that expensive.  I was impressed with the level of engineering in some of these rigs especially the custom built buggies.

All in all, a good selection of very capable trail rigs. I wasn't able to stick around to see the events but if anyone has any video, they can upload it to the site.  If you are from the Durham region and are interested in joining a 4x4 club, check them out at http://www.durham4x4club.com/. They know their stuff and are a community minded group raising money for Habitat for Humanity. XT
